The Difference Between Geeks, Nerds, and Dorks

August 12th 2009 04:05
Geeks/Nerds/Dorks
It's impossible to tell which just by image alone. Hunting these groups exclusively is thus nearly impossible.

This post is meant to be a clarification of many misconceptions using popular dictionary and reference points used today.

First, we'll examine the differing definitions according to a popular site, where the best descriptions of the terms are voted on and decided by the public. Urbandictionary.com

Geek

1. The people you pick on in high school and wind up working for as an adult

2. Not to be confused with Nerd. A geek does not have to be smart, a Geek is someone who is generaly not athletic, and enjoys Video Games; Comic Books; being on the internet, and etc.

3. The term "geek" originally referred to the carnival performers whose act consisted of biting the heads off chickens and eating glass. Over time it came to be applied to anyone who got paid to do work considered odd or bizarre by mainstream society.

The term now enjoys a special status within the technical community, particularly among particularly knowledgable computer programmers. To identify oneself as a "geek" indicates a recognition that most people still consider programming computers to be a bizarre act, along with a certain fierce satisfaction in being very good at their inglorious profession.

That most software geeks now easily earn twice as much as the average laborer just sweetens their defiant embrace of the term.

Note: Unlike the word "nerd," which is always pejorative, "geek" often carries a positive connotation when used by one of the group. The use of the term by outsiders is considered insulting.

Nerd

1. One whose IQ exceeds his weight.

2. An individual persecuted for his superior skills or intellect, most often by people who fear and envy him.

3. An 'individual', i.e. a person who does not conform to society's beliefs that all people should follow trends and do what their peers do. Often highly intelligent but socially rejected because of their obesssion with a given subject, usually computers. Unfortunately, nerds seem to have problems breeding, to the detriment of mankind as a whole.

Dork

1. Someone who has odd interests, and is often silly at times. A dork is also someone who can be themselves and not care what anyone thinks.

2. (n)a whale penis

3. Someone who sits around, writing the 500th definition for a word in the Urban Dictionary, as if anyone will ever read them all.

The next place we'll visit is a user created encyclopedia, and one of a kind in it's popularity and magnitude, Wikipedia.com

Geek
(excerpt)

" A person with a devotion to something in a way that places him or her outside the mainstream. This could be due to the intensity, depth, or subject of their interest. This definition is very broad but because many of these interests have mainstream endorsement and acceptance, the inclusion of some genres as "geeky" is heavily debated. Persons have been labeled as or chosen to identify as physics geeks, mathematics geeks, engineering geeks, sci-fi geeks, computer geeks, various science geeks, movie and film geeks (cinephile), comic book geeks, theatre geeks, history geeks, music geeks, art geeks, philosophy geeks, literature geeks, historical reenactment geeks and roleplay geeks."

Nerd

"is a term often bearing a derogatory connotation or stereotype, that refers to a person who passionately pursues intellectual activities, esoteric knowledge, or other obscure interests rather than engaging in more social or popular activities. Therefore, a nerd is often excluded from physical activity and considered a loner by peers or will tend to associate with like-minded people."

Dork

"USA pejorative slang for a quirky, silly and/or stupid, socially inept person, or one who is out of touch with contemporary trends. Often confused with nerd and geek, but does not imply the same intelligence level."

And another offshoot of Wikipedia, Wiktionary seems to be useful in this situation. Click on the names below:

And here's a little something for you guys who want to know how geeky you are:

Really Long Link

If you get under a 20%, and are confused by almost everything on that list, then you are a dork.

If you get between 20%-40% than you are a Grudging Geek most likely. You chuckled at a lot of the references, but still didn't understand to any level a good number of them.

If you get 40%-60%, you are a real Geek. Don't deny it. You recognized everything on that list, but didn't necessarily believe/know what it was.

If you got about 60% you are a complete Nerd. You knew everything that was mentioned on that list, and you shouldn't be here, since you would probably do more good to the world if you spent this time hacking or programming. Get to it!

(I got 35.50296%)
