The Cat Is Out Of The... Box? Boxee To Develop App!
April 21st 2010 08:00
Boxee, the "social" streaming video service that's set to launch its new video set-top box later this year, is looking for a lead iPad and iPhone app developer. Engadget HD found the recent job posting on Boxee's Web site, where they're looking for a coder who knows Objective-C, a programming language used on Apple devices. The candidate must possess a year's worth of professional app-building experience and should have some Android experience.
The ad also states that Boxee "consider other screens, " such as those on cell phones, "as important as TVs for enjoying video," and that the successful candidate would become, "the first member of our Mobile Applications team," which could possibly mean that the selected candidate will be creating apps for a long time! (From that description in the ad, I would have to agree!)
Boxee, the open-source "social media center" for streaming media (including Netflix, Comedy Central, Pandora, and Flickr) made headlines last year when they revealed their latest creation, the Boxee Box. (Not too crazy about that name! Is that the best they could do?) This is a video set-top box, made in collaboration with D-Link, that will allow users watch all their streaming Boxee channels on an HDTV. The Boxee Box is set for release later this year priced at $200. (Fairly reasonable!)
Boxee is at odds with Hulu (the web's OTHER streaming tv channel, which I watch when I miss my favorite shows!) because they blocked Boxee from its streaming feeds at the request of content providers, such as NBC and Fox. In addition to the release of the Boxee Box, Boxee also offers free desktop clients for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
The Wall Street Journal reports that iPad users have already streamed an impressive 650,000 episodes via Apple Player for iPad. (Wow! That's a lot of streaming! Pretty soon, we won't have a need for a "regular" television!)
