As Pagan Naturalists we believe in a self sustaining world. A world where people consciously try to think about their impact daily. When I started on this path years ago I had a long way to go. I still do but I have made baby steps. I don't smoke any more. I don't eat red meat. I stopped doing those for two different reasons. I stopped smoking for my self, my children, and my soon to be husband. I stopped eating red meat due to mad cow and because cows use the most water and grain of any animal to bring 1 lb of meat to the table.
I think my largest contribution to the world so far is teaching my children not to eat cow. We don't call it beef. Just as we don't call pig “pork”. It's pig. Bacon is pig, pork chops are pig, it's all pig. My kids call it cow and pig as well. It does give people pause, but most don't say anything about it. We do eat pig, no a lot or even monthly, but we won't turn it down when given. On the other hand we will turn down cow of all sorts.
What does this have to do with ANYTHING pagan. Well, if you viewed Earth as your Mother and every Mammal as your cousin, would you really want to eat them? No, I didn't think so. Chickens I have no problem eating. Same thing with all birds or fish. However, other Mammals are kinda special to me. They are like cousins on our plates. Ewww...
So the next time you eat any mammal, ask if mamma would be happy about that...
