Naturalism in my life
May 3rd 2008 20:45
Naturalism, or wanting to be close to nature, is a part of my religion. I sincerely believe that Mother Earth is the only thing that humanity needs to save itself. That said, how do I implement this in my every day life. Other than home schooling my children to negate the consumer culture in America, I keep them close to Mother Nature in as much as possible. Well beyond gardening to get their food, they have first hand experience wild crafting food, handling non-poisonous snakes, observing local birds, bats, moths, and butterflies. They have learned to use much more of what Mother Nature gives than most children.
Did you know there is a new psychological disease associated with the fear of dirt. While I don't consider this to be an actual disease, because it's psy- anything (psychology, psychiatry, etc...), it does show how far our culture has fallen away from the closeness with Mother Earth. It's as if our current culture believes we can live separate from Mother Earth and turn the whole planet into what we want it to be. How sad.
I live in the south, and during summer it can be very hot. Now, when I was a child air conditioning was unheard of. One went out swimming with friends to cool off on a hot day. Even mothers with babies did this. Today people stay inside and fan themselves in front of air conditioners complaining about the heat. This just goes to show how far we have strayed from Mother Nature again.
Another thing, is a study done on mentally ill patients, again I hate to use any psy source, but it showed a decrease in distress when working in a farm atmosphere for those patience. Many patience showed vast improvement. Again, Mother Nature heals just by being around. I'm sure you can see how biased I am, I don't try to hide it.
Also, there are some pretty nasty illnesses that can happen in nature if you don't know how to avoid them. Over all though all of the psychological illnesses discovered in the past 30 or so years could be fixed with a little "nature therapy". Or what I call my Goddess, please think about these things and tell me what you think.
