A View To A Kill? Verizon Leaks A Sneak Peek Of Droid Incredible!

April 15th 2010 08:30

This just in! Verizon promises an "Incredible" follow up to the Motorola Droid, the HTC Droid Incredible! According to what looked like an inadvertent preview page on the Verizon site (it has since been moved, of course, probably a marketing tactic!), the company will start taking pre-orders this month for what it calls the Droid Incredible by HTC. Verizon calls the Incredible the "next chapter" in what has been a modest success with Droid phones, which are powered by Google's Android software. The Incredible has attracted the attention of techies who are excited about the specifications and features that stack up quite well on paper.

The specs behind HTC’s latest device are pretty drool-worthy: It is expected to have Qualcomm's Snapdragon CPU, an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and video, and a 480×800 OLED screen just to name a few. (See images below for entire spec list and accessories!) Given all of this, it has potential to be the next great Android device (I think it almost looks like the iPhone!) If these characteristics sound familiar, there's a reason. The Incredible appears to be a twin of Google's own Nexus One phone made by HTC (If the phones are made by the same company, wouldn't one expect there to be similarities? Is it just me or what?) Coincidentally, all has been quiet on the Nexus One front since Google first announced it would be selling a Verizon Nexus One version of the phone last month.

Given the similarities between the Incredible and the Google Nexus One, it is questionable as to the viability of both phones ending up on the Verizon network. Because the HTC Incredible will carry Verizon’s Droid branding (and clearly features the Sense UI), it isn’t likely that the phone will be sold directly through Google (Google), as is the Nexus One. So does that mean that the Nexus One is still coming to Verizon? (Ha-Ha..the plot thickens!)

For consumers, it ultimately may not matter if the Nexus One officially arrives on Verizon or not, especially since the Droid Incredible will offer the same features plus a better camera. The Nexus One is now available for AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint subscribers in the United States, making Verizon the only major carrier that doesn’t support the phone. Google’s Nexus One page still says “Coming Spring 2010,” and while that technically means it may still appear in late June, it will be interesting to see whether or not the Droid Incredible changes the scenario.

This move comes as Apple gears up for its fourth version of the iconic iPhone at AT&T and potentially kick-starting a new round of phone shopping by consumers looking to upgrade to a touch-screen phone. The rivalries have been building in smartphones as Google's Androids have been gaining popularity by offering a more open, user-defined mobile device. The Droid Incredible will launch on April 29 and will go on sale for $199 (I like the name AND the price! From the buzz I've heard, people ARE starting to prefer Droids over the iPhone!)
